Niko spent the night away from mommy for the first time on Saturday night.
The Abuelos have been asking for an overnight visit for the last couple of weekends so we decided to take them up on their offer for Saturday night.
We have a many non-Niko evenings, but this was the first one we weren’t running back home to relieve the babysitter. We had the whole night to ourselves.
We started the night by watching an uber-violent movie at home. We followed that by a dinner out then headed downtown to one of our favorite bars, The Brick. I love The Brick – it reminds me of when DH and I were in college together.
We did all of the things we used to do before we had Niko …. and all we did was talk about him.
We joked about him, we did impersonations of him and we worried how he was doing without us.
It’s amazing how much you change when you have kids.
I used to make fun of couples that only talked about their kids even when they were away from them. I’ll be darned is we aren’t the same couple I used to mock.
I’m sure that we will get better about being away from him after a few more sleepovers... maybe we could even go an hour or two without mentioning Niko!
Are we just being silly or is this common? Please let this be common…
totally common but as they get older, it becomes more about "what are we going to do about..." than how cute they are (and they are still pretty cute). We talk less about them now and more about me! ;-)It's common. And the older they get, the more you *need* to talk about them when you're away from them, b/c they can sniff a conversation out at home and they're either listening or interrupting.You must learn early on that you must NOT talk about the kids when you are on a date. (ok, you can have 10 minutes.) You are with your partner. You are not with Niko's dad. He wants to be with his partner and not with Niko's mom. It's too easy to fall into that routine and forget why the two of you got together in the first place. The time from where you are to where I am (empty nester) takes about a minute and a half. You need to not get out of the habit of talking about non kid things.It's common. It becomes more necessary as they get older. But make sure you have other things to discuss too. You don't want to be that couple sitting there with nothing to say to each other.It is funny because by the time I get a night or weekend without the kids I am SO ready for it, but when it is time for me to go to bed, I can't go to sleep because the house is SO quiet. I am really glad I have at least ten years before I become an empty nester, because I am afraid I will never get any sleep then!So common! Our kids go to nana and pa's almost every weekend and we still miss them and talk about them while they are gone. Make fun of the cute things that the do. They are never far from our minds!It's common and it's a bad habit. I'm with mamalackey--find other things to talk about. Music, politics, current events, books, the creepy neighbors, getting a new dog. Doesn't matter--find something! You'll never run out of Niko conversations, but if you don't keep other things alive, you'll get bored with each other.
