I personally think that Valentine’s Day is a sham. It’s a fake holiday created by corporations to guilt people into buying their products/services. It’s this weird validation of love/relationships that we feel the need to do every Feb. 14.
When I was single it was my most hated holiday. Nothing makes you worse than being single on Valentine’s Day. When I was dating my husband, the pressure of Valentine’s Day was daunting. What if I don’t spend the same amount of money… what if his gift is better than mine? Ack! Too much!
My husband asked me what I wanted for Valentine’s Day last week. I told him either a date night without Niko or to have the carpets in the house cleaned. I really want the carpets clean, but a night out would be nice too.
Maybe I’m just too practical. Perhaps I should be more romantic…..
For Christmas all I wanted was a new sink, for our anniversary I asked for a new faucet. I’m eyeing a new entry light for Mother’s Day….
Are we the only ones who give these lame gifts? What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?I love getting practical things for holidays. DH and I rarely do anything for Valentines day anymore, we'd much rather have a nice dinner at home and save all that money! Don't get me wrong, I love all things Valentines day for the kids, but for us it is just another day. I don't need a bunch of chocolate calories to know my husband loves me, I'd much rather get a Home Depot gift card. :)I really like Valentine's Day, it is fun to tell the people you love how much you care, I guess its sad that we need a holiday to do so. I am a closet nerd though, filling out my sons Valentines was fun : ) Though growing up making the V-day box was the BOMB! One year I made a "boom box" wrapped my shoe box in foil and you could put the valentines in the cassette tape slot. I WAS SO AWESOME!! No one makes boxes anymore :(Was so glad to see the Chinese New Year on Feb 14th this year (of the Tiger). Gave us the chance to do the Chinese New Year and Mardi Gras (Tues. 16th) Would even like to see schools change Val-Day party to Spring Party. They changed Halloween to Fall/Harvest Celebration and Christmas to Winter Holiday Party, why not stop end a holiday that makes so many people feel deliberately alONE. I know, it's just a day, and it's what you make of it, but seems the commercial world is too geared to twosomes. When I was single, it was not MY favorite either. Would like to change out many of the holidays. I'll bring up a post about it. Good blog.I HATE V-DAY! However, now, it is my daughter's birthday so we celebrate that and don't really recognize the holiday. Although I suppose we should recognize it somewhat since we have had a second daughter but celebrating V-Day on a different day seems kind of silly. And giving her a present on DD1 bday seems like we are giving her a present because the other one gets a present...then the other one will expect a gift on DD2's birthday but 4/1 is not a gift giving kind of day...it is a practical joke kind of day...SIGH...anyway, you aren't the only one for practical gifts or your feelings on the holiday. I totally agree!Valentine's Day isn't my favorite holiday, but then again, I am not married or dating. But the kids love it, so I digress. I love practical gifts, that is what I usuallly ask for when asked on holidays! We do cards for each other & get the kids something small. The 2 older ones got Starbucks gift cards. Something I know the both enjoy. Usually we go out to eat. But this year we are sprucing it up. We have been living in 2 different states for 2 1/2 months now & I will actually be in IL this weekend. My mom's boss owns a nice hotel & she got us a king suite w/a jacuzzi for a discounted $40. Wasn't passing that up! We are still going to dinner & then to the jacuzzi minus children for an entire night! Whoo Hoo!!!I like it, now that I'm married, but when I was single, it was indeed rather lonely. DH and I do not exchange gifts on V-Day, it's one of those "one way" holidays at our house. I receive a gift from him, but I don't give anything to him.We try to refer to it as "St. Valentine's Day," to remember the person for whom it's named. Seems to help take the "Hallmark Cards" out of it. (Not that I have a thing against Hallmark, lol) Personally, I have loved it since I was a kid. My dad was such a softy, and he always lavished me with chocolate that day. So, I was conditioned from childhood to love it, LOL. When DH and I first got married, he didn't know about the grand Feb. 14 tradition I was used to, so the first couple stunk. Then, he caught on, and since then (nearly 20 years now) he's done great. He gets us all chocolate and he gets the kids each a balloon. I'll often get roses, too. Sometimes, I feel a bit bad that I don't generally get him anything, but he assures me that to him, a date night serves nicely. Sadly, though, he'll be out of town on St. Valentine's Day this year...so I guess we'll celebrate early.I so agree with you. I am more of the practical gift kind of person. I would rather have something for my house than anything else. I guess it is because I really don't "need" anything. My DH and I don't exchange gifts. He used to buy me something but I asked him to stop doing that. We don't get cards because to me it is a waste of money. I don't like to keep them. Now, when it comes to the kids, I LOVE the holiday! I get them a bag full of candy and I'm with sugar mama on the whole filling out the Valentine's Day cards. I used to put something together for all my nieces and nephews but I'm not going to this year. I am trying to scale back a bit. Let's see....roses, chocolates and a nice dinner or carpets cleaned......I can smell the fresh scent in my house already! From the clean carpets of course!I knew I was happy and loved the first time I got a small kitchen appliance for a holiday. No more pretense, just a desire to please someone else. There's no better way to say "I love you" to me than with a stand mixer.Practical gifts are awesome. I got new pots and pans and a new mixer for Christmas and was over the moon. One year we got a bathroom remodel for our anniversary. And I got carpet for my 30th birthday. :-) No gift makes me happier than a gift card from Home Depot or NFM!Wait, you 2 got stand mixers?!?! WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? I guess being single is the first problem : ) I love it though! Love is in the air...No way, sometimes those requests put in at a holiday or birthday are a way to get them (added pressure). I asked for a Dyson vacuum 2 birthdays ago and I still think it's awesome. My husband would of bawked at the price of that vacuum had it been any ordinary shopping excursion. It was the birthday that sealed the deal. You guys could always go somewhere to lunch while the carpets are being cleaned. Then everyone is happy.
