As many of you know… I work retail on the weekends. This year marks my tenth Christmas season in retail at a certain specialty store that kids love.
I was at my faithful post again on Saturday morning after the dreadful snow storm.
I am ALWAYS amazed that people will shop no matter what the weather is doing. Customers will come in when it’s snowing, thunder storming, threat of tornadoes and freezing rain.
The same was true this weekend. We had customers waiting outside before we opened.
I don’t really care if you want to endanger yourself, WHY would you bring your kids out in bad weather?!?!? I’m talking about little kids that don’t do well in cars that get stuck in the snow or in accidents as a result of the snow.
If I worked at a grocery store I would feel different, but we don’t sell anything that you can’t live without.
I had a woman tell me that she was surprised that we were not that busy and that people must be afraid of the bad weather. I smiled and handed her receipt to her and wished her a safe trip home. She told me that she had a lot more shopping to do that day.
Yes… she had her kids with her.
Her kids were bundled up, but they were both under the age of 5. It was about 9 a.m., still snowing and I know the roads hadn’t improved that much in the hour we were open.
I constantly scratch my head at this… why are you here in this weather? Why would you pile up your whole family in a car and risk being injured/killed for a few material goods?
When I was in middle school, my best friend’s sister was killed when she lost control of her car on a snowy night. Heather was driving home from work and skidded off a bridge and landed on a moving train below.
It was a horrible way to die.
Heather was 4 years older than us and I remember what it did to that family. I remember going to my friend’s house and seeing the temporary fix they put up after the accident. Still to this day, the repaired part of the bridge is a different style of railing than the rest of the bridge.
Sorry to be Debby-Downer, but I really can’t understand why people risk so much for so little.
I hear you on this one Kim. I feel the same way and nearly nixed Christmas festivities to avoid being on the road. My children were not with me that night so I went ahead to the party, had they been home I surely would have stayed in.We didn't take the peeps out for three days b/c of the weather and b/c I was concerned about getting stuck with two toddlers in the car (a nightmare in itself, bad roads or no bad roads) or worse. Thankfully, our original plans included staying home on Christmas. Otherwise, I would have cancelled regardless of the guilt trip I would have received from family.What people always seem to forget is, no mater how great of a driver you are, or how awesome your vehicle handles in the snow, odds are you aren't the only one on the road. And you have no idea how well those people drive or how their vehicle handles.Sunday afternoon we saw a woman driving on yucky roads WHILE talking on her phone! Nice one! Oh, we were out because we were going to a movie, but since eldest realized she forgot her glasses as we got to the theater, we went straight back home. I think bad weather brings out more wackos than a full moon!
