Moving sucks. I LOVE our new house… but moving all of our stuff in is a bigger job than I though. What makes it an even bigger job is that Niko is having a sort-of break down on us.
I honestly thought that Niko would walk into our new house and love it. The layout of our new house is much better for kids. Our old, split-level house was not very toddler-friendly.
For the first few days all Niko did was cry and want to be held. I was totally surprised by his reaction, really. It was no big deal for me – I wore him around in my baby backpack while I unpacked. (He loves his baby backpack.)
We have been in our new house for two weeks and Niko is still very clingy. My MIL has noticed that he has become more baby-like as well. She asked me if I was pregnant because of the way Niko has been acting. (I really hope that’s not the case… now I’m worried!) She jokes that we have spoiled him.
This really does concern me… I am constantly worried that I am spoiling Niko. My mom and dad joke with me all the time because they know I’m paranoid about it. I do dote on him… but I don’t think any more than any other first-time mom.
My babysitter says that her boys went through a similar phase when they were Niko’s age (almost 15-months old.) She said not to worry about it and that it will pass in a few weeks.
So now I’m confused… did I spoil him? Is he still adjusting to the new house? Is he just going through a phase?
We have painted his new room so that it looks like his old room. We haven’t had a chance to hang his wall art yet… maybe that will help.
I’m really at a loss about the whole thing. I wasn’t worried about it at first, but after two weeks of crying and clinginess, I need help. I love my little man more than anything, but I can see why they use crying as a form of torture.
Any tips on how to help toddlers adjust to a new house? Is it really just a 15-month old phase? Are you a mom in the same situation? Help!
Doesn't separation anxiety peak at 15 months? That coupled with such a huge life change like a move... I don't think you should be overly concerned after just a few weeks. I'm sort of in the camp of, you can't spoil a kid with hugs. Especially one who's still practically a baby. You could always ask your ped, if you don't see a light at the end of tunnel, he/she might have some good tips as well. I feel for you.A big change like a move is HUGE for a 15-month-old child, who is just really getting used to being in the world as it is! Once he sees how relaxed YOU are in your new surroundings (hint hint), he will begin to relax also. Proxy is right--talk to your pediatrician and see if there are things you can do to help him make the transition to new surroundings. Good luck!!!DS is 16 mos old and we have this battle all the time. DH jokes that he would crawl back in me if he could; that is how bad the anxiety can be. And that is just for a trip to the bathroom. Or forbid I should have to go to the kitchen and stir something. I dont really worry about it. Everytime I think I have kids figured out they change so I would just roll with it. Could just be the timing of the move hit when the phase was beginning and it may make things last a little longer but it will pass.It may have not been a big deal to you to move, but to him it was huge! He will just take a while to get adjusted. And since it was such a huge change in his little life there maybe some regression. Also according to our pediatrician you can't spoil your kids! Give them all the love that you can while they are little because there will be an age when they don't want it for a while! With sashamae on this "spoiling" thing. Kids have mood changes as often as they get a drink. If you're worried, check with his pediatrician. Otherwise, "spoiled" is a nasty label people say to parents. (sometimes children, too) Especially when they (the labelers) can't find something NICE to say. While carrying him around may be cumbersome while trying to set up housekeeping, take the minutes and hours. I agree in 15 years, he'll want no part of "hanging around your neck". LOLMy brother and sister lived in Seattle and worried about their kids not knowing family. My sister-in-law created a picture book with our pictures and names, and would read it every night to her kids, and talk about us. When we went to visit, her kids ran right up to us and hugged us, because they knew us from their story books.
