Last week I packed away all of Niko’s summer clothes into the “for future children” bin. I stared into his empty drawers and realized I couldn’t put off winter clothes shopping any more.
I love my little man, but I hate clothes shopping for little boys. Their clothes are so boring.
It seems that when I go to the store there is a tiny corner of boy’s clothes and a whole section for girls. (I don’t see how this is possible when we are in a “boy boom.”)
In that tiny, 7-rack section for boys, there is the same tired blue with red stripes clothes or truck/car/construction/racing/football/baseball outfit. Lame. How many blue shirts can a boy own?
I know there are a ton of specialty/boutique shops that have cool clothes for boys, but I also refuse to spend $25+ on a kids t-shirt that he will fit/poop/spill in for 3 months.
Every now and again I can score some fun clothes at Target, but they have a pretty limited boy area as well.
It took me three weeks to find a winter coat that I liked. THREE WEEKS. I finally found a coat that wasn’t blue or blue with red stripes at The Children’s Place. It does have blue, but it’s only the trim – the overall print is a black and white robot pattern.
I guess it’s because I’m a designer that I care so much about color and design. I just don’t see why boys can’t have a fun pattern or use a wider palate of color. Could manufactures maybe try using orange, purple, lime or yellow in boy’s clothes?
Some people may be afraid of putting their boys in a “girl color,” but I would welcome it. I personally don’t think that putting my son in a “girl color” shirt is going change who or what he is into something else. It’s a shirt, that’s all it is.
(I feel the same way about toys too, but that is a topic for another time. I really don’t understand why some people get upset if their little boy plays with “girl toys.” It’s not a big deal in my book – if you make it a big deal it will become one.)
This kinda turned into a rant, but I’m wondering if anyone else is sick of boring boy’s clothes too? Other than Target, am I missing some fun/cheap place to get boy’s clothes?Children's Orchard off 119th and I35. Love that store. It is second-hand, but they have great prices and a good selection. You're not alone. I feel the same way. I won't spend a fortune on cool boy clothes either. But sometimes for Christmas my mom will buy Bo a cool shirt from the baby Nordstrom or baby Halls section. I used to get stuff at Lilibelle on the plaza, but they shut down. Surprising enough Walmart has a few cool things... And I always browse Old Navy for Bo too...Hmmm, come to think of it... I have lots of stuff Bo doesn't fit into. Although, I'm also saving it for the next baby... but if one day I get preggers and find out it's a girl, I'll totally let you rummage through Bo's boy stuff!I tell you what, I gave up on Thrifty type stores selling good boy clothes, and admittedly do spend a fortune because I REFUSE to put my son in shirt OR PANTS with firetrucks, lambs or a FREAKING T-REX! RRRRRR!!! I buy all the basics at baby gap and the "funky" items I search boutiques. Halls is great for a winter ensemble. Junk Food Tee's I have found AWESOME retro Star Wars, He-Man and even an AMAZING Mr. T t-shirt but DANG they make you search for awesome boys stuff! Dressing a girl would be AWESOME-I would probably go broke though :)Yeah I ran into that with my 2 boys. Maybe you could design a line of cool boy's clothing? Why can't we have boy's boutiques or speciality apparel? Why does it always have to be girls clothing that gets the cool colors, textures, etc. We're regulars at Old Navy, but their boys clothing selection is "blah" to me. Sometimes I'll break down and give into my teenager son who wants to go Journeys or Hot Topic.Hmmm, come to think of it... I have lots of stuff Bo doesn't fit into. Although, I'm also saving it for the next baby... but if one day I get preggers and find out it's a girl, I'll totally let you rummage through Bo's boy stuff!Amen. Gap Outlet is a good place. Still mostly blue and reds, but they get some nice yellows and oranges too, at least. Plus the stuff is at least a little more stylish. And right now Old Navy has some super cute vintage style t-shirts for little boys. Superman, Rolling Stones, Run DMC and Sesame Street. DD is SOOO much more fun to shop for!I feel your pain. Unless you want to dress your boy in shirts with sports, dinosaurs or characters on it you are kinda out of luck! My son is more of the rock and roll type. I was surprised when I found some really cute clothes at JC Penney. I pretty much shop everywhere. Gymboree, Children's Place, Target, Old Navy, Walmart (they have some wrangler jeans that are a dark color and a loose fit that look so cute on him and are only $13!), JC Penney and Gap. You do see a lot of the same colors and I hate those striped shirts! I like to take the vintage tshirts and put a thermal long sleeve shirt under it.I am so. there. with you. I've had some luck at T.J. Max, and I've gotten some cute things from the Salvation Army and other resell shops. While we're talking tho--what about gender-neutral items? Everything is blue and pink. Everything. What if I want clothes I can use for more than one kid, regardless of whether said kid is an innie or an outie? Grr.There is also a Children's Orcard off I-29 N and exit 5. They're in the phone book. I think they're on "Chattham Ave" or something like that. Usually VERY good deals. They are next to a couple of very rich neighborhoods, so sometimes you get some really nice stuff.Yep, manufacturers make plenty of stuff for girls from newborn up, and very little for boys. I know exactly what you mean. It was the same way when DS was born almost 14 years ago. I think the stores think that we will spend more on our little girls than boys, and we will teach our girls about fashion and shopping from the time they are small.I smiled when I read this because I have the opposite problem. My boys are older and they will only wear plain blue jeans, plain t-shirts and plain sweatshirts. I miss the days of getting to pick what they wear. :)I ,too, toss out the GAP outlet store to you. Sometimes I can get the cutest pants and shirt set for around $15, and it seems like they're more durable as well. We've also been lucky with some buys off of ebay. When they're younger, you can find all sorts of clothes lots on there for very reasonable prices. We've even managed to buy a whole slew of stuff with the tags.
