Niko's 11 month photo. Yes... I am evil for keeping this photo, but this is how I will remember picture time.

I am doing a flash-back blog this week. We went to the photographer this weekend and I was reminded again how much I hate this process! We are not doing the official monthly photos with Ryker-kun, we did have a tough time with our older son again.... sigh.... some things never change. :)
Yes… I am that parent. The one who had “official” photos taken every month of their child’s first year.
The first weekend of the month meant dragging Niko down to the photo studio so he could melt down in front of the camera. Out of a 10 minute session, there would be about 5 semi-nice photos and twelve dozen crying/eyes closed/running toward the door photos.
Sunday was no exception.
Thinking this time would be different, I dressed Niko in the Yukata he received as a gift from my husband’s family in Japan. (Yukata is a traditional Japanese summer kimono for little boys. They are really only worn for special events like photos or festivals.)
Since this was going to be his one year old photos, I invited his “aunts” and his Godfather to be in the photo as well.
We arrived at the studio and after the third photo it was melt down time. My husband and I tried to take a family photo and it resulted in us looking stressed and Niko crying/climbing out of our arms.
After six failed pictures we finally got one that I don’t hate and it’s time to call in the extended family so they can share our misery.
I am super stressed at this point. Niko is crying/mad and I asked three friends to give up their Sunday morning to watch a one year-old melt down in front of a camera while we smile and try not to blink.
After ten attempts we get one that will work. Niko is not really looking at the camera, but he isn’t crying/climbing either so it’s the one we go with.
The photographers do their editing thing we come back and see what the photos look like. Out of 20 photos about 5 of them are nice enough to buy. I don’t fault the photographer, it’s just the way it is with my son. The other 15 are of him not looking at the camera/crying/climbing out of my arms.
I look over at the couple to my right who are going through their photos.
Their perfect pictures.
“So many cute ones to choose from – I can’t decide!” she says. She had about 20 perfect pictures that showed her adorable daughter looking in the camera smiling.
Humph. Sorry for your dilemma.
My process is pretty easy – I pick the best of the worse. He’s sort of looking at the camera and not crying – sold!
I will not miss my monthly torture – I am only getting his photos taken every 3/6 months from here on out. I’m glad that I have the photos to see his growth, but I hated the process it took to get them.
Anyone else hate picture time as much as I do?Except for very young infant pics, my kids did not smile most of the time for pics either. But, they weren't total meltdowns. At least you could get some.....Ours is about the same, and my daughter is OLDER!! She takes great pics at home, but put her in a studio and you would think we're trying to torture her. We did/and do professional photos every 3 months til 1 year, then every 6 months til 4, and every year after that. You're not the only one who suffers for a decent picture. Ours are currently delayed b/c she is sick. Hope the rest of yours go better!! EVENTUALLY they kind of get used to it.This may just be a crazy mom's opinion here but even though that picture isn't of a smiling happy baby, that picture is beautiful of Niko and I would have it in black and white and up on a wall somewhere!Love the photo. My photographer does a 9 picture collage for me of every session, and we always insist on one crying photo. DS and DD have both had adorable and difficult shoots, so I feel your pain. I am a picture girl, and I spend a lot on my photographer, so it's so frustrating when the kids don't cooperate! God love my photographer, Jenny, though. DS can be the biggest butt ever and somehow she STILL always gets at least one cute shot. I have no idea how she does it.My son was afraid of Santa.....all the pics with him from age10 months to 4 years look just like that.
