I debated on whether or not to write about this.
It’s never been a big deal that my husband and I are an interracial couple. (I’m Caucasian and my husband is Asian.) We talked about the fact that we would have to be somewhat sensitive to the fact that our kids would be biracial.
After five years together we have never had one incident until last weekend.
We were at a local frozen custard shop in Independence hanging out with some out-of-town friends who are also and interracial couple. (He’s Caucasian and she’s Hispanic.) They have a beautiful daughter who loves chocolate ice cream.
I didn’t even notice the guy at first. He had a shaved head and was wearing a rebel flag t-shirt, his son was wearing a Dukes of Hazard t-shirt. My friend who was with us noticed the fact that he was giving us the stink-eye. I thought she was crazy, but she was right - he stared at us the entire time we were there.
His son went to come over to our area to play with the kids (who were all biracial) and he grabbed his son and told him loudly that we were not the kind of kids to play with.
Wow. Seriously?
It wasn’t a big deal at the time, but the more I thought about it – the more it got to me. I really don’t care what people think about me… but my kids… that bothers me.
I’m not bagging on Kansas City, but there is a lot of racial tension here that I don’t feel when I go home to Chicago.
Obviously this incident was pretty light handed. No big deal when you think about things… I just worry for the future.
Are there any other biracial families on this forum? Any words of wisdom from someone who has had to deal with this sticky subject?
That does not surprise me at all. After my house fire,DD and I were staying at a hotel not far from the custard place. A large group of african american singers checked in on a fri. by sat.,someone had written the N word on several cars in the parking lot. Just goes to show that some people will never evolve past their knuckle dragging roots.I have nothing to say except what an ignorant butthead. You would think this kind of thing doesn't happen anymore, but I know sadly it does.I'm just starting to experience looks and comments. My DH and I are white, our oldest DD is biracial black/white, and our other DD is white/black/vietnamese. It is very confusing to strangers when they see us all together. So far, it's been curiosity. But I know it's just a matter of time until we deal with overt bigotry or racism. It's been eye opening to me as a white, fairly priveleged, white woman.Your experience is so disappointing. As a native Kansas Citian I like to think our town is more evolved than that.Hope your kids (all of them) didn't hear what Knuckle Dragger said. Sad that his kid had to listen to it. Sadder that you will have this memory for your lifetime.As a mother of two biracial boys and the wife of a Caucasian man, I can totally speak on this. Although I can say it's definitely not just Kansas City, but it's everywhere...still...in 2009! It truly bothers me. It just hurts that their children will be the ones missing out on getting to know others due to the ignorance of their parents. But then again, their parents learned from their parents and so on...so who will be the one to break the cycle in these families. Never let ignorant people get to you. Pray for them and move on!I'd think there are some not-so-open minded folks in Chicago, too. What other things have made you think there is a lot of racial tension here that's not in Chicago? I like mabry, like to think for the most part KC folks are pretty down-to-earth and polite.Whoa. That's as overt as it gets. I'm so sorry you all had that experience. Just take those experiences and teach your kids why that was wrong. I know your son is really too little right now, but unfortunately it'll probably happen again when he's older. Thank goodness most people aren't so ignorant.
