Modern day Snow White by Dina Goldstein
The only thing missing from this photo is that prince charming isn’t playing video games and there needs to be a mound of laundry waiting to be folded.
I remember being a little girl dreaming about my future husband. My favorite Disney movie is Sleeping Beauty. I love the art, story and of course happy ending. I used to pretend to be asleep and that only my prince could wake me with his kiss.
When you grow up you quickly realize that’s not the way it is. There are no dragons to slay, no beast to defeat. Just the everyday battles… dishes, laundry, bills and yard work. I get weak in the knees when my husband does the dishes AND the laundry!
It’s interesting to see how American girls are obsessed with Disney Princesses. I wonder if it’s because of Disney’s giant marketing engine or because so many moms were raised on it too.
I admit it… I spoiled my niece with Disney Princess products. She has all of the movies, toys and clothes… compliments of Aunt Kim. I won’t go into the details, but she didn’t have a traditional early childhood. I was worried that her self esteem was in jeopardy so I treated her like a princess.
She is now almost 10 and she is a well-adjusted, normal kid. Sometimes I think we went a bit overboard with the princess stuff. Every now and again that princess attitude comes back to bite me.
I do wonder if my next child is a girl if I would be so ready to make her a Disney Princess or not. I doubt I will really have a chance… it’s everywhere! I guess I will just have to make sure she knows what the real world is like when she gets older.

They'll have their whole life after the Senior prom to face reality-that most men aren't princes and that there is a heck of a lot of workt hat goes into raising those golden cherubs...I say, let em dream, while their young and innocent that your dreams really can come true, because for some they do!I have to admit -- I've seen these a few times now... and I can't stand them. I know I 'should' like them, because they are dark & ironic & whatever, but I don't. I don't think they're 'true' to life, I think they're a bit mean. I'm with sugar, let them dream -- there's nothing wrong with seeing the good in people. :D Good blog, Kim.I never wanted to be a princess but dd loves them. I think she knows its pretend play, she doesnt say I want to be just like (whichever princess) when I grow up. She just a regular little monster once the glittery dress comes off.You can avoid the Disney Princess!! My DD is 2 and has nothing with Disney Princesses on it! She doesn't have a barbie or a Bratz doll. So it is possible! She has her favorite baby dolls which are normal nothing special dolls and her favorite stuffed animals which are puppies. All that being said she has quite the princess attitude sometimes! I think she was just born with it!The princess myth is dangerous if you ask me. Those are not real people. They are characters. If we treat it as fun/fantasy maybe girls would have a more realistic view.My daughter was into "Little Mermaid" stuff for a while but it was because she liked the mermaid costume. I don't even think she knew the character was a princess. I always disliked the "princess" junk just because that reminded me of the spoiled little brat and "princess" could do anything she wanted. My daughters favorite shirt said, "Yeah, I got your princess" with a hand looking like a snap.
