As I squeeze my 9-month-old son into a too-small 12 month outfit something occurs to me – infant clothes sizes are more of a suggestion than a rule. Niko will be in 18 month clothes before the end of the month… actually before the end of the week at the rate he’s going.
When I was pregnant I foolishly bought ahead, thinking I was smarter then the sales. I bought a bunch of clearance summer 9 and 12 month clothes last fall convinced I was being money-wise.
The summer 9 month clothes never had a chance…. Niko hit 9 month clothes in January and has been in 12 month clothes for 2 months.
My son is not gigantic by any means – he’s always come in around the 75 percent mark on the growth charts. (Except his massive head which is at the 97 percent mark.)
I wonder if the system doesn’t work because it’s impossible to gage infant sizes or if it’s a plot by baby clothes manufactures to have customers have to buy the same outfit in 3 different sizes. Hummmm…..
My new game-plan is to shop only for the current to next season. I’m hoping not to get burned on any more purchases. I need to resist being tempted by winter clearance sales in the middle of summer. It’s easier said than done…..
If there is any advice I SHOULD have listened to with my first baby it’s this: BUY USED CLOTHES!!! I have been hitting the garage sale circuit and it’s WAY better than any clearance sale I have been to.
I bought some Carters sleepers for $1 that looked hardly used. I asked if they were new – she told me that she bought them on sale and her son grew out of them before she had a chance to put them on. Familiar story….It is hard! They grow and grow and grow and then all the sudden they stop for a while! Emma even went down a size or 2 when she started moving good!I always buy off clearance, or garage sales. I always buy two sizes bigger for the next season. So when it was winter and DS1 was wearing 18-24 months, I will be getting probably 3Ts for this coming winter....With DD, she was generally one full size ahead of the age...and still is. She will be three in August and is in 4T. DS however will be 1 in July and is pushing the limit on 24 month. It almost seems like they keep getting smaller. I like that Carters clothes have the weight and height ranges they seem to be pretty close, but how small are the kids that wear the sizes that are true to age?I always had to double whatever size my first son was supposed to be in--at 3 months he was in 6 months, at 12 months he was in 2T. Lucas is 6 1/2 months and is in 12-18 months stuff. He's a 23 lb 6 month old though. Fatty cuteness!!I found it's best to wait until they are born and then a couple of months old to gauge their size and growth rate. After that, you should have better luck buying ahead. For both of my kids until they were about 3 the answer was to take their age and double it. That would be their clothing size.I know the most confusing parts is all the different stores label their sizes differently, like Children's Place and Carters 12 month, is actually meant to fit them up to that age, the weight and height theirs compares to that of other brands that label them 6-12 or 9-12 months, meant to fit during those months. It is very hard to know how they are gonna size up when they come out. We brought newborn stuff to the hospital and had to send my mom out to buy preemie outfits because my DS was so tiny. With DD we came prepared with a variety of sizes. Both of my kids have been lil things. But even they have run sizes a little bigger than their current age.I'm with you... in preparing for DS' arrival I took off tags, washed everything and found 1/2 of my shower gifts unused by the end of the first season! I wish someone had given me the heads up to wait. I'm a BIG consignment store shopper now - I started with maternity and now consign and buy along with attending Moms w/Twins sales and hand me downs I get through each season with very little retail purchases! Of course having a little boy helps curb the urge too.I agree with the sizes. I think they want us to by the same outfit three times. As far as sales go you could probably pick up summer stuff in July on clearance. Remember fall clothing will be on the racks by August. I used to buy like you described for DS. Now at 13 he doesn't like anything I buy so he has to go with me only when he needs cloths. As far as boys go, the marketers know what they are going. There was always way more cloths for girls than boys. They get the girls to go for the cloths at an early age.
