Last Wednesday, Mike Tyson’s 4-year-old daughter died after being strangled by a treadmill cord.
Before I became a mom these stories were sad, but I didn’t dwell on them. Now… I can hardly stand to hear about these stories… they terrify me.
I see death traps everywhere I go - I think it happens the second you become a mom. I remember driving home from the hospital with Niko and imagining us getting in a horrible accident. My driving skills are better now that I am a mom.
I looked at my house with new eyes after having my son. I saw my cats as threats instead of companions. I had a nightmare a week after my son was born that I dropped him and his head split open like a watermelon (complete with watermelon seeds).
I have walked through my house dozens of times looking for ways that my son could kill himself. I get down on my hands and knees and crawl around so I can see what dangers are at his level.
It’s weird, It’s hard to even watch child violence on TV or movies anymore. I am a big Cold Case Files/ American Justice junkie, but now if the stories involve young babies… I can’t watch it.
Is this common – or am I crazy?
I don't think you're crazy at all! I think all moms, to some degree, obsess about their kids' safety. For instance, when I went back to work after my first was born, I started taking a different route to work because I was terrified that if I went about my old routine, I'd forget and leave him in the car. We all suffer from paranoia of some kind! I think our mommy brains just get the best of us some days...You are not crazy. You are just going through a natural concern for you child. I work at Children's Mercy Hospital. Although I see a lot of really crazy things there, I am always amazed at the resilience of the children. Their bones are soft as they grow for a reason. It's always a challenge to find balance between concern and obsession.Your not crazy at all! When I see things like that they make me cry! It is just a big change in life that brings a lot of emotions with it!I'm right there with you! It does get better, at least the imagining death traps everywhere part did for me. But I still can't take any violence against children in movies/shows. It amazes me because I rarely noticed it before I was a mom, and now I'm like "Wow, this is everywhere."We went camping this weekend and I kept imagining my 3 year old falling down the port-a-potty hole. No you are not crazy! You would be crazy not to be over-cautious. I worry all the time that something will happen to my kids. My heart goes out to Mike Tyson & his family. A simple household item turns into tragedy. Every parents nightmare. So, so sad!It is normal...I know I worried all of the time. The kind of worrying you do changes I think, as I have learned as my children have grown up. I worry about different things regarding my 15 year old than I do my 8 year old. You're not crazy--I'm terrified, too. I'm there with you on the addiction to procedurals--Bones, L&O, American Justice, you name it, and I can't watch them any more when my son is with me (he's 4 mo old!) even if he's asleep, and I can't watch ones with children at all. The SIDS stories are the ones that get me the worst--why is it that everyone thinks the first-time mom needs to hear all the blasted SIDS stories? My poor kid gets checked on multiple times a night just so I can sleep. *sigh* It's good to hear from the other commenters that it does get better!I know, I hate any kind of tv show, movie, etc where a little kid is hurt in any way. Makes me sick. When our daughter was an infant, I feared sids. Then when she was older, I feared kidnappers or her hitting her head. Now that she is 12, I still fear kidnappers, things that her and other kids can be doing. If she isn't home right on the dot, I am on the phone and standing at the door. I don't think the worrying will ever stop.
