As most of you know... we are trying to sell our house. I have been watching alot of HGTV and the first thing they say is de-junk your house. I must say that was easier said than done.
We had a lot of work to do. We haven't been able to park in the garage for 3 years due to the amount of junk in there. The basement wasn't in any better shape - junk everywhere.
I am a packrat. There I have admitted it. (It's the first step, right?)
I have toys from my childhood, old high school art projects, college t-shirts that don't fit anymore.... you name it, I kept it.
To prep our house we had to get not one, but two POD units to clear out our basement and garage. After a month of cleaning, sorting and packing we finally cleared everything out. We filled a dumpster and a half of all my old junk that I was willing to throw out and filled the two PODs of all the stuff I was not. We donated over 16 bags of clothes and other items that were just didn't fit us any more.
We have been living junk-free for two months now... and I must admit.. it's better. I haven't needed ANYTHING that I have packed away yet!
I have a hard time even saying this... but my husband was RIGHT. We don't need all of that stuff. ARG... I hate being wrong!!!
When we eventually do move into a new house I will have to unpack two PODs worth of stuff that I now know I can live without. When I think about all the money I have wasted on items that I haven't touched in years... it makes me depressed! What a shame!
Looks like I will be having a huge garage sale in my new neighborhood. It will be a good way to meet my new neighbors! :)
That sounds SO familiar! Our basement is FULL of stuff that I know I don't need, but can't bring myself to get rid of.Oh I so know how you feel! I have been trying to go through all of our stuff and at times it is a little overwhelming! But I just keep reminding myself that this needs to be done because my kids will never fit in a 3-6 month outfit again so I can get rid of all of those!When we moved here in Nov I thought we had gotten rid of a lot of stuff. WRONG!! Our garage has been full of boxes which we just got all emptied 2 weeks ago. As we opened them there were 3 piles on the driveway: keep, donate, garage sale. We had a nice sale this past Sat & sent a pick-up truck load of the remaining to donate. We did list a few of the bigger items on Craigslist. We are in a much smaller home than we are used to and the clutter drives me nuts!!! My dh is the keeper of stuff. Oprah says if you haven't worn it in a year, let it go!!! Now if I can get him to do that.I am a complete packrat. I can't throw out any of my old report cards or papers I have written in college. Band/concert shirts and shirts that I have collected through clubs in high school. I still have baby stuff, even though I gave my husband an ultimatum between another child or a house (he chose the house, go figure). But I keep stressing that we have siblings that will eventually settle down and make us uncle/aunt. Lo and behold, we now have a neice and I now absolutely no clothes to put her in. Toys I have... but essential items are G-O-N-E!
