Why I thought it would be a good idea to move in February, I will never understand.
Perhaps my belief in global warming is too strong and I never expected snow to disrupt us. More likely, I didn't believe our house in Kansas City would sell so quickly. After about a month and a half on the market with no showings, I was sure we'd be sitting for a long time. Then -- bam! -- two days after the New Year came our first showing. And kazam! we had an offer.
Now here we sit at my parents' house, the night before the big move. We've been busy, so I don't even know how much snow you all ended up getting. I am four hours west, somewhat sheltered from the storm.
We were in denial about the weather forecast for most of last week. It'll be fine, we thought. We had movers scheduled to help us pack the truck on Tuesday. How bad could it be?
Then Saturday, after a crazy week of preparations, work and procrastination of the Big Event, we faced reality. It took three days to dig out after the last round of snow. No way would we be able to do that again while packing, loading a truck, cleaning and corralling a toddler and a preschooler.
A few calls later and we were on our way out of town. The movers were flexible and could help Sunday instead. The truck was available. Apparently demand for moving services aren't that high in the dead of winter. And because it was the weekend, family and friends were available to help.
At the helm of a 26-foot truck, my dearly beloved white-knuckled the drive west Sunday night, just ahead of the storm.
That was the best decision. But even though our new town, Concordia, Kan., has missed the brunt of the storm, the weather effect has trickled down and threatened our move-in day -- today!
For one, we may not be able to pay for the house at closing. I hadn't gotten a cashier's check in time because I thought I would have Monday to do it. That meant we needed to wire the money on Tuesday. But understandably, our bank in KC stayed closed Tuesday.
Which means that the sellers won't get their money, which means they won't be able to pay for their new house, scheduled for closing the same day. That house happens to be in Oklahoma. Which happened to be hit by the storm.
And because their movers were coming from the south, they didn't arrive until 7 p.m. Tuesday -- 14 hours before we were scheduled to close. Which means we won't be able to get in on time, which could throw off all kinds of appointments through the rest of the week.
Deep breath. Transitions are hard. But this one is almost over. And we could have it so much worse: A woman I spoke with for our moving company said someone she knew had a heart attack shoveling snow last week.
So, whiny rant over. Be careful out there, Kansas City!
You guys be safe! Next time you come through and have some time, let us know, we can try to get together, even if it's just for lunch!
