You know that feeling you get on New Year’s Eve when you realize that everyone you know has been invited to a party or is going out dancing and you suddenly become overwhelmed with anxiety because you have no plans, nowhere to go, but it doesn’t really matter because you don’t have a date anyway?
Other than not having a date, my family is experiencing that same angst this week. Since this is our first year of school, this is our first official spring break, and we don’t have any plans.
Facebook is riddled with posts about cruises and skiing expeditions and Disney and road trips to see grandma. We haven’t given this break much thought until now, and it’s a little late to conjure up funds for a vacation.
Besides, for a family that frequently travels together for work, the idea of actually going somewhere for spring break sounds a bit exhausting – not to mention expensive. However, we still feel obliged to DO something.
So we’ve decided to make a concerted effort to visit some budget-friendly KC landmarks that we often neglect or only visit when it involves playing a show. We’ve experienced just about every family friendly and fun attraction in the metro, but usually from behind the scenes. It would be nice, for once, to actually go through the front entrance of these places as patrons rather than loading sound equipment in through the back door.
Our list includes the zoo, Union Station/Science City, Kaleidoscope, Wonderscope Children’s Museum, Liberty Memorial, The Money Museum at the Fed, The Toy and Minature Museum, the new park in our neighborhood, Deana Rose Farmstead, Lakeside Nature Center, Johnson County Arboretum, and The John Wornall House.
Not that we’ll have time or energy to do all of these, but we’ve got a bunch of choices.
What is a must-see or must-do that you have on your list?
I am lucky enough to get to go somewhere this year, but one year we did a spring break at home and we hit the Toy and Miniature Museum, Lakeside Nature Center, The Kansas City Museum and Truman Library. We even picnicked in the park because we had really great weather that year. The kids had so much fun and they didn't care that we slept in our own beds each night! We, too, are lucky to be going somewhere this year, but this is the first time we've ever taken the kids anywhere for spring break, and the first vacation we've had in four years. Last year I took time off and took the kids to the zoo - that is always a definite staycation destination. And you sometimes need two days to visit everything there. We love the Toy & Miniature Museum and Deana Rose as well. Have fun with your family! You have lots of great options! Just a FYI that Deanna Rose doesn't open until April 1st. I know this because one year my husband and I took an out of town friend's daughter there in March and promised a pony ride - it was a sad little girl that heard there was no farm to visit and no pony to ride! Enjoy your staycation!Maybe transportation KC style? Carriage ride on the Plaza, Amtrak to 1st stop east, Crown Center's Train (kid friendly) restaurant, the Connie (airplane) museum and the Harley Davidson Plant. Step back in time? Pony Express, Jesse James Farm, Truman's house, Liberty Memorial. Day trips: Fantastic Caverns, Jeff City, there's a book about them. Our must-see? all the above.I like all your choices! The only ones I'd add that others haven't are parades (St. Pat's day in Brookside and KCMO), Crown Center (combined with Science City and Union Station, that's a full day), Moon Marble Co, Feline Sanctuary (I have one son still begging to go back there) and the Shawnee Indian Mission. When our kids got older we went to Branson (VERY small crowds in mid-March, except for opening day at Silver Dollar City). Let us know how your trips go, they sound great!
