A few months before our wedding, as my wife Jeni was registering for our wedding gifts, she told the saleswoman how excited she was about getting married. Another woman overheard their conversation and said to Jeni, “You may be excited now, but take it from me – the towels fray, the dishes chip, the sheets fade, and then you get divorced.”
Wow, have a nice day to you, too!
Why anyone would tell a bride-to-be something like that is beyond me.
Maybe that woman was trying to say that the sheets, the towels, and the dishes don’t really matter; it’s the love and the people in our lives and the experiences we share that matter. And I suppose it’s true that if the “things” become the focal point, then the marriage is certainly doomed.
All relationships experience their dinks and nicks and faded moments, but it’s how we love our way through those imperfections that make our bonds stronger.
Yesterday, Jeni and I celebrated our ninth anniversary. Yes, the towels have frayed, the dishes have chipped, the sheets have faded, the furniture is scratched and worn, and I still think my lovely bride is the coolest chick in the room – no matter what room we're in. And we have two beautiful girls who remind us how blessed our life is.
Yep, we’re living the chipped and faded dream, and I love it!
Obviously that woman had suffered from a pretty bitter divorce. I am divorced but I certainly love that people are still getting married...and are able to make it work. Unfortunately, there are a lot of statistics out there showing that marriages aren't working or people aren't even getting married. It is too bad. Congratulations to you on your nine years of marriiage!Congratulations on your anniversary! Marriage is something that definitely needs to be cultivated every single day. My husband and I have been married 18 years. He still drives me to work in the morning. We used to do it because we had only one car, but recently had to get a second vehicle as our family outgrew the # of seat belts. I figured he would want his time back in the morning. His answer - he still wanted to drive me to work because that was our "20-minute date" to discuss our lives, world events, dreams, future vacations or what's for dinner. We would not change it for the world. In a world of Kardashian 72-day marriages, 18 years may seem like a long-long time, but I think we are just in the middle of the beginning. All the best!Congrats to you and your wife! You have a lovely little family, irregardless of what's faded or chipped. Love lifts you up!Congratulations! We have been married 56 years and still enjoy each other very much. Four children, eight grand children, eight great grand children. Just keeps getting better. He still tells me he loves me at least once a day and how pretty I look when I get ready for church. Keep working together, it will last a lifetime.
