Women can be catty creatures; cliquish gossips and sometimes down right mean witches.
But not the women I hung out with on Saturday. They were smart, insightful, intuitive, compassionate, fun, funny and absolutely fabulous. It’s been a long time since I hung out with the girls. In fact, for the most part, I’m a guy girl. Most of my closest friends are guys; less drama, you know. Being the mother of two boys, I have always felt most comfortable with “the guys.”
I’ve always felt a bit inadequate when hanging with the girls. I’ve always felt a tad too fat, too poor, too old and not smart enough to compete.I think compete is the operative word here. I have always felt like there was some type of competition going on when a bunch of women got together; you know, who drives the nicest car and whose husband has the best job, makes the most money and who has the nicest home, the smartest kids, and on an on. And I never seemed to come equipped to play.
Maybe it has something to do with the women I’ve picked to hang with or my own unattainable wish list. I don’t know. All I do know is that I’ve never really had many girl friends. Just a few here and there, my sister is my best girlfriend and she tells me she is the same way about having a host of girl friends. She doesn’t.But I think I’ve always secretly wished for women running buddies, kind of like the crew on “Sex and the City.”
On Saturday I had a “Sex and the City,” moment. Actually it was more like 10 hours. Six of us got together to wish a friend well in her up-coming marriage. I had been looking forward to the event for months. I was hosting at my house. Another thing I don’t do much — play party host. I’m great at parties but not so good at planning them. Especially when the onus is on me to prepare the menu and worst, clean the house. But since my boys are away for the summer I thought it would be fun. And it would give me something to focus on and not miss them so much. That part worked.
In fact I kind got a little over zealous about the whole thing and went over board on the food, wine and beer.
I think in my head I was some old-school socialite (think Diahann Carroll – late1960s) putting on a high-end party for my ché ché friends. I had enough stuff to feed Pharaoh’s army (a phrase my mom would use to mean a whole bunch of folks.) But mama also always said if you throw a party and there are no leftovers then you didn’t prepare enough. At any rate the gathering began on time at 2 p.m. not everyone who was invited showed up, but those who did made up the perfect gathering. Funny how things like that work out, no matter how much the host things it’s going to be a dud, like there’s some almighty party goddess working it all out. The wine flowed freely, and everyone dug into the servings of smoked salmon, skewered chicken and plum sauce, tandoori chicken thighs, nacho chips and peach, mango salsa, cheese and crackers Chinese pot stickers and veggie platter. Yum, if I may say so myself. We topped it off with strawberry, wine smoothies. We talked about everything from current political events to books and movies and things our mamas used to say and do; the latter was hilarious. We talked about kids and cars and relationships and love. And yes we even talked about sex, a little. We laughed and hugged and everyone got along, it was great!
What was billed as a four-hour affair didn’t end until nearly 1 a.m. And some how I got the feeling, that if sleep wasn’t a necessity, we could have seen the sun rise. When it was over I had mixed feelings; I felt great that they had come, and sad it had to end. I guess I’ll have to change my feelings about hanging with the girls. When it’s the right mix of women there’s no better power to lift your spirits, make you feel in touch, loved, beautiful… fabulous even. Boy I sure hope I can get together with them again sometime. I loved it.
