Turns out I am a creature of habit.
I shrug to even type that. Could that really be me, the girl who alternates two different color plates on the shelf, just because? Or the girl who takes different routes home just to change things ups a bit?
These last two weeks of snow storms have proven that I am actually a routine-based person.
I’ve been extremely busy these last two months and have looked on some upcoming projects around the house with the “will get done after basketball season” label. Turns out a couple of snowed-in days in the last two weeks didn’t shorten that list. Why is that?
My regular schedule: wake up, work out (if not too tired), shower, pack car, help husband get girls ready including hair, lunches, breakfast, take them to school. Oh yes, I get dressed in there somewhere.
This schedule leads me into ultra-organized super working Mommy mode apparently. Usually I work on my Aflac tasks—going to meetings, taking care of policyholder requests, meeting prospective clients, etc. Over lunch, read my Bible, work on Bible Study. Then I finish the day strong with work—heading home, church (Wed.) or a basketball game to officiate.
Snow-day schedule: wake up, look outside in amazement, calculate how much shoveling is involved, check on family (in and out of home), work out, prepare breakfast, shovel, help with school project (4th grader), figure out what work-related events are getting postponed. Try to contact clients by phone or e-mail. At the end of the day a lot had happened but I never felt like what I wanted to accomplish got done.
Quality time with our girls was the best fringe benefit. They watched KU basketball with us (later bedtime than usual). We played some board games. They played outside—helping some with snow removal.
But in all, as I was driving today doing something normal (officiated at Leavenworth High School) and I thought about how my change of routine throws me off kilter. I had to e-mail one game scheduler with an apology because of it.
I e-mailed all other necessary folks. I returned calls today (the first day I received more than one work-related call since last week).
But if my snow day was equal to production on the basketball court I felt like I was working hard but walked away with 3 points and 2 rebounds (not good for non-basketball folks).
So while some just lament the snow and the inconvenience. I guess I need it to melt and go away to get back to my routine.
Who knew? After all these years, I thought I was Violet Variety and I’m actually Priscilla Predictable.
Stay safe. I hope the snow brought more good than bad to folks no matter where you fall in the variety of life arena.
