I have a confession to make. I have almost all of my children’s baby teeth they’ve lost so far.
That statement is going to get some different responses:
1) Why? (What I would have said pre-baby)
2) How many? (From fellow mothers with baby teeth-separation issues, like me)
3) Good gravy! Throw those things away! (From everybody else)
I can’t tell you that I’ve obsessed about them or anything. Really it’s just the fact that I don’t throw them away after donning my “tooth fairy” suit. I collected one just this Wednesday. It’s not like I take them out or put them on display.
I just don’t know what to do with them. I’m only missing one that was lost on a trip to the Kansas City Zoo with school. My now-9-year-old was in kindergarten and eating an apple. She doesn’t know if she swallowed it. But it was gone.
I was telling my husband today that I think I can’t throw away “part” of my children I guess. Funny, I didn’t have that problem when I was tossing used diapers (don’t think too hard on that one).
If I told you I have a family history of teeth collecting and some sort of family legacy connected to teeth, my mother might disown me. I have no deep connection to teeth or anything.
However, counseling might not be necessary for me just yet.
This appears to be one of these things that occur after some mothers give birth. It would fall into the same category as:
1) Made up words/phrases/songs you only use with your children.
2) Starting to cry when your child does something unexpectedly adorable.
3) An inability to stop seeing them as that tiny baby you brought home from the hospital. (My Mom still does this and I’m almost a foot taller than her)
4) Staying up till 2 in the morning making a costume for some very important event.
I never knew that that positive pregnancy test had so many other fringe benefits—not to mention the child who can make you laugh, cry, sigh, worry, rejoice, scream and plain shake your head.
If anyone has any fun things they do with baby teeth, I’m curious. They might just stay in my drawer until my daughters are a foot taller than me. I happen to already be shrinking—5 feet 10 ¾ inches to 5 feet 10 ½ inches. I am not happy about that evidence of the passing of time.
The teeth will keep coming. Who knows? Is there an art market for Teeth Art?
i also have a little box of baby teeth. Somewhere I have seen a necklace made with little teeth attached to a chain. That however seems a little creepy to me.I have mine kid's teeth all in small boxes with their name on it in my lingerie drawer. I don't think I'll ever do anything with them, but just having them as a tiny memento of them as they were little is enough. I'm sure one of them will, someday in the far, far future, be emptying my drawer to give my clothes to goodwill and find them. "Mom! Gross!" I can hear it now. It'll be great....I don't think that's the name of the market or genre but ceramics with human and animal bone inclusions have their own compliances for trade just like tropical hardwoods etc. Dental Researchers might also thank you; local sources are awesome! Nope, just hug someone who talked shop with/as a doctor on what to do with placenta, then feel free to turn around and make a Wedgwood dental hygiene shibboleth to dry boots on in the bathroom.
