I really want to make a shameless plug for my alma mater, Northwestern University, who broke a 63-year losing streak in bowl games in the Gator Bowl Monday.
Go Cats! Victory is sweet—even though my mother was in elementary school the last time Northwestern won a bowl game!
Oh well, there it is.
Really for those who tire of the many bowl games this time of year, I wanted to give you a reason to look beyond the obvious commercialism and think of the young people competing.
Wednesday evening we were watching the end of University of Louisville upsetting the University of Florida. While I was washing a basketball referee uniform (yes, we wash them after games), I listened to some of the stories behind the Louisville players. One young man’s mother had battled cancer for years and was able to attend the game to cheer for her son, the starting quarterback. Another young man—who happened to be good friends with the quarterback—had a mother in an 11-year medical ordeal dealing with AIDS in the stands.
I ran to put the clothes in the dryer and when I came back my husband was telling me about another player who had lived in 16 different Foster Homes in his childhood.
I had just commented to Darin about the opportunity a band member had to travel and go to amazing places when they participated in that extracurricular activity for their school. A lot of hard work could be a life-enriching experience no matter what your gift is.
So, maybe you tire of the Bic Pens Tidal Wave Bowl (I just made that up) or the Fruit of the Loom Grapefruit Bowl (yes, really, guess I need a hobby).
But if you take a minute (like me in between the 42 things that have to happen before bedtime) and can catch a bit, you might be surprised by the stories behind the helmets.
Again, this Medill School of Journalism 1991 Northwestern grad was proudly wearing her Wildcat Purple Monday. My husband, the KU grad, will only wear Northwestern Purple.
I will, however, be cheering for K-State Thursday night. Maybe it’s a Cat thing. Or maybe it’s cool to see a 73-year-old coach with character whip up on the young’uns!
