Today is the day that everyone should remember what they appreciate and why.
I wonder how many people will actually take the time to do that.
In between turkey, dressing, rolls, green beans and pumpkin pie there needs to be a place. Before getting absorbed in football games and other distractions, everyone should take a moment.
Other than personally writing a “Thankful” list, I’ve never thought to create a routine around thankfulness on this day. This is the first year I asked the family if we could take the time and say something we’re thankful for after the meal (way too hectic before).
This year I’m thankful for the big and little good things.
My big good “thing” list:
1) My family—I’m learning not to take them for granted.
2) My health—I keep meeting more loved ones of people dying and realizing each day is a blessing.
3) God. The rest of my life would be irrelevant in so many ways.
4) Life’s trials—without them I’d not appreciate the good times.
My little good “thing” list:
1) Sunshine—it can change my outlook. The sun makes better light than a light bulb.
2) Jokes—with loved ones especially. My girls are champs at this.
3) Holiday weekends with James Bond or Clint Eastwood marathons—what more is there to say.
4) A good book.
In all, I’ve tried to make a daily habit of being grateful. Maybe no one else struggles with this but when I’m not thankful for the blessings I already have, I rarely appreciate any new ones. In fact, I can usually pinpoint the start of a foul attitude with an ungrateful outlook.
So yes, I’m going to be enjoying the day today. I’m going be especially thankful for the chocolate cake I’ll have for dessert. More importantly I hope many will make this Thanksgiving one of 365 this year (leap year) they’ll be grateful.
