I had my much-shorter hair styled in Charlotte, NC for a recent wedding.
In the last four weeks, I have been asked repeatedly by family and friends if I cut my hair.
I haven’t.
Also, when I was at a wedding recently in Charlotte, NC, I had a chance to get my hair done with the wedding party. When the stylist said, “It would be nice if we had some hair to add to this,” I was taken aback. “No, told her, I just have the hair on my head.”
Never in my life has someone posed the “w” question. In fact, I’ve never given much thought to my hair needing to grow. My hair has always grown to just past my shoulders. Unless I cut it shorter, that’s where it would be. A girl, who has always had a ponytail back-up do, has been a little challenged with this latest development.
I hadn’t really been sure of my hair breakage until other people noticed it. My hair isn’t thinning on my scalp—something for which I am grateful. It just broke off significantly on the back of my head.
This had made me a lot more sensitive to people who have gone through significant hair loss because of their health—chemotherapy, certain medicines and health issues. I look in the mirror and realized I missed my hair. No, it wasn’t Beyonce-like but I liked it just fine thank you.
So, then I started asking around and doing a little research. I read about Biotin, Vitamin C, and Iron. I called my doctor to schedule blood work. Some of my friends mentioned perimenopause as the culprit or thyroid. My doctor recommended I try Rogaine for Women while waiting for my appointment.
This whole experience has just occurred in the past week so I can’t say it’s been resolved.
I’m not down about this hair challenge—just trying to process it. If anything, it’s been eye-opening. I had no idea until I Googled hair loss for women that there were so many “gimmicky” hair replacement products. According to some of these, I would be rocking Crystal Gayle or Cher-like locks in no time. (Yes, I went old-school with not one, but two ‘70s long-hair icons).
I avoided the gimmicks and am trying Biotin, C and Iron along with Rogaine (generic from Target) for now. For anyone else facing this same dilemma, I plan to follow up and let you know if I should get used to cool breezes on my head. I’ll also share any good advice I glean from this experience.
We’ll see. Until then don’t take your hair for granted, you never know when it will leave you.
