The bird.
I saw a guy giving the one-fingered salute to another guy with such vehemence at a stop light Wednesday morning.
I thought, “Nothing like a pleasant drive to school with my girls.”
In fact, the recipient of “the bird” was a car that had passed me minutes earlier across a double-yellow line on Parallel Road in Basehor, Kansas (just west of Kansas City, Kansas).
I’ll admit I’d snickered when said passer ended up sitting at the stop light just in front of me. He had to hurry, drive way over the speed limit to end up at the same spot I got to by going the speed imit. As soon as the light was green, he tore off. I shook my head at the idiocy of it.
Instead of dwelling on the “passer” I talked to my girls about the day.
While talking to my girls, I noticed the car driving east on Parallel and I saw him again driving aggressively. He passed a white truck with a camper. He looked as if he wanted to drive on the Kansas Speedway last weekend.
For all of his aggression—no endorsements came his way. Just another red light.
As he sped off again, that’s when he got “the bird” from the truck in front of me.
That’s when it hit me—again. We can really affect our own joy and lack thereof. I have no idea whether this man spent the rest of the day running down people in his car. For all I know he ate some bad scrambled eggs Wednesday morning and needed to get to a facility. Other than bad scrambled eggs I have decided to make a concentrated effort to hold on to my joy.
In my 43-plus years, I have let mean kids in elementary school, cruel boys (often pint-sized throughout my school days), caddy girls in college, constipated bosses, rough circumstances and any minor negative thing affect me. This is a confession I’ve just recently made to myself.
So rather than give the man a one-fingered salute, I chose to focus on my blessings instead. And you know what? It made for a fantastic day. I’ve heard it said often but I am truly a believer.
Christi (of-the-past) would have ranted to anyone who listened about the knucklehead who passed me illegally. I would have let that be the beginning of a negative chain of events. That was not my day at all. A few bumps and bruises but we made it.
Focus on the negative and that’s what you’ll get. Deal with what happens and move on. I really hope that guy dealt with the bad eggs or whatever it was.
Don’t let anyone steal your joy—it’s yours for the keeping.
