First day of school was scary for this Mommy—for different reasons.
Today I’m sharing a secret.
Last year, the Diggs family started the school year with a kindergartener and a third grader.
This year, we have a second grader and a fourth grader.
We are completing our third week of school and I’m still trying to get used to it.
Daley is unfazed. After her first full day I asked her what she thought, “The work was easy Mommy.”
So, that’s it. We had a chance to consider whether or not this was a good idea last spring when the principal, Mrs. Christopher, proposed that she skip first grade. In her many years of teaching, she said she hadn’t recommended it before. We decided to go with her wisdom. The announcement was made in front of the entire school at kindergarten graduation. It created an odd feeling. I think I had a deer-in-the-headlights look.
We had already told her older sister—whom we credited for encouraging Daley to do well. After all, Darby is a straight-A student herself. We were careful to encourage big sister during the revelation that her sister was doing something she had not. We spent the summer trying to make sure that we were preparing both girls for this adventure.
I have to admit that I had a few anxiety dreams that I was going to get called into the principal’s office for not preparing Daley properly. Why is it that we always have that fear of the principal’s office?
Each day I look over homework of both girls. They’re starting off great.
Daley’s teacher, the wonderful Mrs. Oram, keeps letting me know that our second grader is holding her own. In theory this sort of makes sense, our youngest is a December baby who will turn 7 this year. She also was extremely bored during her last year of pre-school—asking for more things to do.
I’ve talked to parents who’ve been glad they started their children a year later or started them earlier than friends. Timing is based on each child. I actually can’t think of parents who’ve had a child skip a grade recently. Any advice would be appreciated.
By the way, I hesitated to write about this for a couple of reasons.
First, I hope I’m not coming across as arrogant about my child’s intelligence. I know that everything my girls are comes from God. I was just asked to feed, love and nurture my children to the best of my ability (sometimes I could do better).
Second, I’m really stupefied by the brains of my children—the fact they’re becoming their own people with unique thoughts of their own. I know there are other veteran Moms out there who’ve been there, done that so bear with me.
Third, I will honestly say I have an inkling of fear (not of God I know) that Mrs. Christopher will change her mind if Daley starts acting like her Mommy or something…
Anyway, the adventure continues. Mommy is just going to encourage and keep the girls heading in the right direction. I know y’all are doing the same.
