"My locks! My lovely locks!"
Charlotte got her first real haircut this week!
It was bound to happen, of course. She had been growing it out for three and quarter years. We cut her bangs twice, but that was just a little trim. Her hair was all the way down to her bottom. Washing it took a long time, and brushing it took even longer. We couldn't leave the house without putting it some variation of braids or pigtails, because if it was down it would get caught in her coat zipper or her carseat buckle. Mealtimes generally ended with pulling some sort of food out of the ends of it, and she would cry and scream and wail whenever we finally convinced her to let us brush it. But anytime we suggested cutting it she would say no. She loves her hair.
I've always felt that my kids' hairstyle choices should be their own, which is why we've let Lotte's hair grow and grow and grow. I finally laid it out for her one day: You can either sit still while we brush it or you can get a haircut. After some deep thinking on the issue, she finally agreed to cut it off.
A friend of mine offered to cut it for free. You can't beat free. I thought I was going to cry at that first snip of the scissors.
Then, I thought about all the times I'd had to wash syrup out of her hair, all the pieces of food that had gotten caught in it, all the screams in the bathtub when it was time to shampoo and how it never seemed to get quite clean enough no matter how much soap I used. I thought about all the hair clips and rubber bands that got lost or broken. I thought about how she constantly had to shove the golden strands of hair out of her face just so she could play.
I thought about the play-dough. I thought about how deeply it got stuck in her hair that one time. I thought about those things, and when that first snip of my little baby's hair fell to the floor, I did not cry. I was not sad. I was relieved!
Lotte sat really still. She followed directions, and she didn't cry. She didn't get stabbed in the eye, either, which was honestly my greatest concern. And she looks so adorable in her new short 'do! I even think it could go a little shorter. The best part is that it takes about five seconds to brush her hair now, and hair clippies are totally optional!
Do you remember when you took your kids for their first haircuts? Were you emotional, or were you relieved? I was sort of a mixture of both. Though I guess the point is, she's got an awesome new style she's sportin' around town, and she loves it!
