Generally, I don't make New Year's resolutions. I tend to run in the other direction from traditional things that I find sort of senseless. I've always thought, you know, if you're gonna make some sort of a change, why wait until some arbitrary date? Why not just start right away? And people don't keep those things anyway, do they? So I don't usually make them. Usually, my resolutions are just one, and that's to just keep on keepin' on.
But this year, our whole family made some resolutions. There are some things I'd like to differently anyway, and why not use a fresh new year to start some fresh new habits. I know, I know. New Year's Day is really just any other day. The only difference is in the fourth digit in what we decided to call our year. But heck, why not? There's something refreshing about making a date and holding to that. Why not?
This year, our family is resolute. At dinnertime, we all sort of went around the table and talked about things we were going to change or do differently.
Mitch, my lovely husband who sometimes can get a little over anxious has decided this was a good year to practice staying calm in all situations.
Marc, my sweet boy who seems to keep getting older somehow, has decided to eat a little healthier. He's had too much candy, he's decided, and not enough carrots.
I have, first of all, decided to go back to my vegetarian diet because I want to be more healthy. I'm also going to practice being more patient with myself and others, and try to be more mindful throughout my day.
Charlotte, my baby who's no longer a baby, says she's going to play more.
Then, there is the issue of getting these things done. Another reason New Year's resolutions bother me so much is because they are full of "I will" or "I am going to". They really seem to be more like New Year's intentions, you know? So how can we turn them into resolutions?
How about saying "I am a vegetarian", or "I am patient, and I am mindful." Mitch can say he is calm, and Marc can say he eats healthy. It's happening now. And Charlotte, well, I'm not sure how anyone can play more than she does, so I guess she's already there!
How do you go about your New Year's resolutions? Are they ongoing life changes like ours, or are they goals you want to accomplish? Did you make any, or do you think they're kind of silly?
I'll keep you posted on how ours are going, but I'm optimistic!
