Something awful happened last week, and I'm doing my best not to talk about it. When I read about the shootings, I was actually looking at the news story on my cel phone in my own children's school, ready to pick them up. I cried. People stared. I told them I was just reading about Connecticut, and I swear to you another mom failed to hold her own tears back. It was one of those, dark, immovable moments that sank your heart like a stone.
And the moment hasn't moved since. It seems I can't stop for gas, or go to work, or get on the internet without my eyes, ears, and mind being filled with words and images about Sandy Hook, or gun control, or policy.
I understand. It's getting a little ridiculous, what with this, and the shooting in the movie theatre in Colorado before that, and the shooting in Birmingham this very same week. We need to talk about the important issues, otherwise how are we ever going to get anywhere?
Except that I need a break. You can only stretch a rubber band so far. I need some good news for once. I need some happy thoughts. And so do you! So, for your enjoyment, here are some happy thoughts I've thought for you:
There's this thing that exists called a Coz-E
For my birthday I asked for an electric blanket, but then I sort of half-asked for a Snuggie. My birthday came, and I kid you not, it was an electric Snuggie! I feel like everyone should know about this.
It was, like, 50 degrees today.
Yay!
I know someone personally...
...who paid off a stranger's layaway. Pass it on!
Kindness comes to Newtown.
I just learned that a man from California called the Newtown General Store and told him he wanted to buy a cup of coffee for everyone in town. Also, there's a knitting group who is knitting little stuffed toys for every student at Sandy Hook Elementary.
What good thoughts do you have to share? I'm sure you can come up with some. It's not that I don't care or don't want to talk about important issues, but it can get overwhelming sometimes. And I suppose, if I have to talk about this, I can take little breaks in between!
We're sending cards to the schoolkids, as are people at my son's workplace. I had to turn off the news on my drive home on Friday. I switched to a tape and listened to some Irish music (I think that the Irish have some of the happiest and some of the saddest music in the world). I hit the sad songs. Waaah! Like you, I'm looking for little things to cheer me up. My prayers are still winging their way to CT.
