It was my birthday this past Sunday. I turned a ripe and delicious 35 this year. That's 35 journeys around the sun. 35 servings of birthday cake. 35 Christmases and 35 Thanksgivings. It's the 35th anniversary of parenthood for my father, me being his oldest.
Wow, 35 years of parenthood. Good job, Dad.
This was also the first birthday that I really started to feel an age, or at least feel a little dreadful about getting older. I've never been bothered by it before. And why should I? I'm still young. The thirties are still young, you know. And yet, I'm bothered. My hair is a tad bit grayer, and my hips make this loud popping sound when I stand up. I have to watch my coffee intake because it hurts my stomach something awful. What's that about?
I didn't even go out for my birthday. Nope, I stayed home with the kids while my husband worked, just an average night for us. I did get cake, however. I wished for world peace like I always do when I blew out my candle.
Still waiting on that wish, by the way. Who's in charge of wishes, here?
Admittedly, I really was feeling sorry for myself this year. I really felt old, like I let my twenties pass me by, and half of my thirties. Sorry, that was, until I realized something wonderful.
I didn't go out for my birthday because I didn't want to. I did exactly what I wanted to do for my birthday, and that was hang out with my family. If I had wanted to go out, I would have. And I did for so many of my birthdays, because I wanted to then. This year, I just stayed home, and I was happy to. My husband, who has been working overnights, came home from work around 6am or so. He was the first to wish me happy birthday, as sweet as it was. The kids made me some cards. I loved it.
Maybe I am getting older. I'm okay with this, really, because from the moment I was born I was getting older. And every moment after that, every birthday I had after that, I got older and smarter. I had more fun, too. I did what I wanted for every birthday, and I got older and awesomer. Every year.
So happy birthday to me! I'll have another one next year. I wonder what awesome things will happen to me between now and then?
