Did you watch the debate? I watched it. I'm not exactly undecided, but I watched it anyway.
I just couldn't help myself. Part of me wanted to be able to know what I was talking about when I discussed it with my students the next day. Part of me really needed to understand what I was getting myself and my children into by voting for Obama.
But mostly? I love a good show.
I missed the first debate. I had to work. But what I caught of it in chunks around the interwebs told me that Obama mostly fell asleep for the duration and lost shamefully. I then watched Vice President Biden steamroll Paul Ryan in the VP debate. I'm still not sure who one that one.
This second presidential debate, however, was something. It was exhausting. Obama was certainly awake, and Romney was, well, aggressive to say the least. There was the ding of the bell and they both came in swingin'!
Okay, it was a show. But I'm a mom, and a woman, and voter and human being. Certain issues are important to me, namely equal rights for women, education, jobs, and gun control. I feel like all of these issues were adressed in one way or another, but I didn't really feel satisfied with their answers. In fact, it seems to me lately like the agendas from both sides have been to be as opposite of the other side as possible. It's frustrating when I want straight answers.
I will say, however, that Obama did a better job of explaining his plans than Romney did. I don't trust any politician to keep his promises, but at least Obama's promises were explicit. And I can't help but wonder why Romney thinks the last four years were so horrible. I'm sorry, but I thought they've been pretty good, comparisons aside. We were very close to having no place to live a couple of short years ago when an Obama program helped us get into this very home. So, there's that.
And then there were comments such as the immediately infamous "binders full of women" remark. It turns me off to know that Romney went out to find names of women to hire and put them in a binder, and I'm sure he'll lose a ton of women votes. Also, someone needs to tell Romeny that calling people "illegals" will never win him a vote, especially a not a minority vote. Not to mention how rude he was to the moderator.
Oh, and telling me that we are all children of the same God doesn't interest me either, because I, like many other Americans, realize that not everyone believes in God. I immediately felt marginalized when I heard this comment.
Now I sit here in the wake of the second debate for the Office of the President, and thought I was a decided voter before, I'm even more decided now. I do wish Obama were a little stronger. I do wish he would quit trying to make everyone get along because it's not gonna happen. But I at least believe that he really has our best intrests at heart. He didn't try to relate to women by saying he filled "binders full of women". He didn't try to relate to immigrants by explaining that his father was born in Mexico to American parents and his wife's family is from Wales. And he certainly didn't insinuate that violence begins in the homes of single parents.
The race is close this time, much more so than in 2008. But it surprises me. I feel like Romney keeps saying these insensitive things as though he doesn't really want to win. But that gap is still close. I don't get it. I guess we'll just have to see what happens on November 6th!
Did you watch the debate? How do you think it went? I certainly feel entertained at the very least, and if anything it was the most exciting debate so far. Of that, I'm sure we all can agree!
Yes, I was very disgusted with Romney's reference to single parent homes and violence. So far as I know it, my kids aren't toting AK47's around, heck they are actually pretty tolerant and caring kids. It was a pretty good show and definitely solidified my feelings on the candidates.I'm sorry. I read (then re-read) your post and, frankly, I don't get it. The last 4 years have been a DISASTER in this country. You said as much in that you were losing your home 2 years ago and the great divider "got you into this very house". Wow, that was good of him. He sure as hell hasn't done as much for anyone else. Next, you claim that Obama is for "women's rights". May I ask what "rights" have been denied you? Still on that kick about Romney "taking women back to the middle ages"? Only a complete fool would entertain that idea. Of course, when your only concern is "Women's rights" - it's rather daunting to see the bigger picture of unemployment, taxes, deficits, welfare, food stamps, you know - reality. What "plans" has Obama espoused? He goes on and on about Romney's "lack" of details yet, I, like the rest of America, am STILL waiting to hear what EXACTLY Barry's plans are - other than to continually increase the deficit until we go belly up. Does he ever mention that these same "middle class" voters - like you and me - are going to have to endure the largest tax increase in the history of the United States under Obamacare? Don't forget - he CHANGED his position on taxes in order to get it through the Supreme Court. Remember his pledge NOT to raise taxes on ANYONE making less than $250,000? Ooopps! Looks like yet another lie from your President. Education? Obama CONSTANTLY talks of "new teachers" "Gotta hire MORE teachers" - the whole time our education is quickly becoming the joke of the civilized world. We don't need MORE teachers, we need teachers to quit worrying about their union footprint and actually TEACH children. People hear and see what they want. However, how anyone (in their right mind) can look at the record of this president and say (with a straight face) that this man deserves another 4 years is absolutely and utterly beyond me. Please feel free to cast your vote as you wish. However, I would ask that before you cast your vote in November, you take a quick look at this video of Obama - in his own words - before you decide. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4puS-yjwsiE Thanks!I watch the debates, too, but have to be careful not to lie down while watching (it's getting late, I'm tired, and I'll fall asleep). It's hard to find anyone with a 90 minute attention span, too. The main thing I like is the chance to evaluate the candidates myself, instead of thru commercials. Have you noticed how "blessed" we are not to be drowning in presidential commercials? KS and MO have already been written off as having decided on the winner, so they're not wasting any time or money on us. So we watch the debates.I agree 100% with "mygr8crew". THe last 4 years have been horrible and he doesnt deserve another 4 years to make it even worse. The "women's rights" issue brought up last night was not necessary. There are so many other issue of much greater importance than that.I think you're right on. I don't know why anyone would consider the last 4 years a disaster, given that we avoid some serious shit. Worst recession since the Depression? How bad do you think it would have gotten without his intervention? It's kinda like saying a vacation was horrible because your flight was canceled to avoid a crash. Sure, it was inconvenient and hard, but at least you pull through it.I didn't watch last night but I recorded it. Hubs won't watch so I will watch with mom later. Answer to your question about how close the race is even though Romney keeps making statements. Answer, many people are close minded. Like my family who I left in the south, they are going to keep believing in the republican nominee no matter what. Obama never had a chance with them. They will not think any other way and no matter how bad the republican nominee is that is who they will vote for. They loved Palin. It is the undecided who will make the difference. Personally I am with you on a lot of issues and I think the republicans have done everything they can to make Obama fail, and for that I can't vote for Romney. Besides if Romney wins we will end up a republican lead nation. I also wish Kansas was not consider a republican state.Exhausting is a good descriptor. I thought the moderator tried her darnedest to keep them on track and make them answer the question as asked instead of using the questions as a platform for their own pontificating. I am not undecided and the debates have not changed my mind, only solidified my choice.
