What a couple of dorks!

For those of you who may not know, there is this magical event that takes place in Kansas City only once a year. That amazing, magical event is known as...
...Planet Comicon.
Oh, I get so excited every year! I am a geek of every sort: comic books, video games, fantasy and science fiction films, books, and television, everything. It's been to varying degrees throughout the years, but Planet Comicon offers up a feast of pop culture and fantasy fandom to satiate any craving. In a past life, I worked at a comic book store and played a lot of Magic: The Gathering. I don't really read comics anymore, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate what Comicon has to offer. It's more than just comic books.
Not to mention, I gave birth to a gorgeous baby boy who eventually grew to be a ten year old who is just as crazy about this stuff as I am.
"Hey, Marc, guess what's going to be at Comicon this year?" I asked my son all excited-like.
His eyes got big. He knew I had news. "What?"
"The T.A.R.D.I.S!" (If you don't know what that is, see the above picture. Search Google if you must. I won't tell anyone.)
His eyes got bigger and he gasped. "Really?" he said, amazed. Then he paused. "Will there be dragons?"
"Probably not real ones."
"Aw."
My kid's pretty funny. Yep. He gets that from me.
I think this was just about the greatest mother/son outing we've had in quite some time. We met up with some good friends, another family as geeky as us. Did you think that was possible? Me either! We found all kinds of goodies we wanted to buy, things we wanted to touch, people we wanted to take pictures of. The costumes were freaking amazing. Captain Jack Sparrow came wobbling by several times.
And then, there was Edward James Olmos. That's right! Admiral Adama himself! (Don't be frustrated with me. I know not everyone knows these references I'm making. Google "Battlestar Galactica".)
You don't know this about me, but I love this man. Not in a creepy crush on a man older than my dad kind of way, but in an I admire him for where he's come from and who he is kind of way. You see, not only do I absolutely love Battlestar Galactica, maybe even more than Star Trek, I also love the movie Stand and Deliver. See, I started teaching for Adult Education about two years ago. I help people who have had to leave high school for one reason or another prepare for the GED. And I teach all the subjects, even math. I've never liked math! But one of our math teachers showed Stand and Deliver to our students one day and watched it for the first time. It literally changed my approach to teaching, especially teaching math. I picture Edward James Olmos' character, Mr. Escalante, every time I get stuck trying to get these kids to wake up and learn this stuff.
And I wanted him to know that. There he was, Edward James Olmos, a major movie and television star, sitting at a table in front of me. He was asking a whopping $50 per autograph, and I wasn't about to pay that. But I wanted to talk to him. I told him everything I just told you, and nearly had tears in my eyes as I did.
"So you like this series?" he asked, pointing to the pictures of himself as Adama in BSG. Of course, I told him, and he grabbed one of the photos. "What's your name?" I told him, and he started scrawling out words on the photo in silver marker.
Val- I love what you do!!! Thank you. So say we all. Edward James Olmos. Admiral Adama. 3-25-12
I kid you not! He handed it to me and I gushed, then walked away totally starstruck.
I met Marc over at the T.A.R.D.I.S. (think "time machine"). He didn't care about my autograph. He was looking into the windows of the big blue box trying to find Rory and Amy (characters from Doctor Who).
Later on, my pal Edward came walking by while I was looking at posters of The Hobbit. We smiled at each other, then when he came by he put his hand on my shoulder and said "Hi, Val!". I gushed again.
Then I went to work the next day and hung the picture up on the wall in my office. I have yet to even find a frame for my college diploma. I apparently value celebrity encounters more than my education.
Even without meeting Admiral Adama, it was a pretty awesome adventure. Marc and I spent some time together, we got to hang out with friends, we saw some kick-butt costumes, and between us uttered the word "cool" about a hundred times. We never did see a dragon, however. Not even a fake one. Maybe next year!
i know you must have had a amazing day. Did you see EJA in Dexter last season? If you have ever watched Dexter you might guess he was a bad guy. I never did get into the newer BSG, I was a Stargate fan about the same time. When Sy-Fy runs the episodes all morning and afternoon again, I will hav to record them and give the show another look. You do know the woman in the show Mary MCDonnel is now on the Closer and will be staring in the spin off. She was also in Dances with Wolves like in 1991 with Kevin Costner.
