As per Marc's request, it's time I let all of you know something. Marc hates ogres.
And why shouldn't he? Pesky things. Always stomping around in dungeons, wreaking havoc and making it so very difficult to defend the crystal.
Oh, sorry! It's okay. Don't be confused. You see, Marc and I have a new activity we enjoy together. It's called Dungeon Defenders!
Marc found it on Xbox. When I was a younger mom with more energy, he used to sit and watch me play all kinds of games. I used to have an old Playstation that he would watch me play. Eventually, he'd want to play the games himself, but I was always there watching him in case he needed help or just someone to talk to. It was definitely a mother-son kind of activity.
Lots of parents play catch with their kids or build sandcastles or whatever. Well, we play video games. So?
I got sick a few years ago, and my mind gets tired from playing games. There are a lot of things I can't really do anymore with the kids, actually. We don't go to the playground as much, we don't go to the movies as much, we don't bake as many cookies. I would love to, and it's torture not being able to, but I know Marc, at least, understands. Mom just gets tired sometimes. He doesn't get mad about it.
Then he found this game, Dungeon Defenders. He played it for a while by himself. Then, one day, with his sweet little ten year old boy voice, he said "hey Mom, do you want to play with me?".
"It's two-player?" I asked. It didn't look like it was, but it was.
"Yeah!" He looked so eager. I was about to say no. I was so tired. But he seemed so excited! So I picked up a controller and signed in and played.
And it was fun! The two of us worked together to build up fortifications to protect our crystal. Then little dark elves and trolls and kobolds came through these huge Medieval-looking doors and we had to fend them off. The two of us developed these great strategies for proctecting the crystal. Then we laughed and yelled and laughed some more!
Until, that is, an ogre came through the doors.
"AN OGRE IS IN THE DUNGEON", it flashed on the screen. We screamed and yelled! "An ogre! An ogre!" We shot our crossbows and swung our swords until we were finally beaten.
"I hate ogres," Marc said, very matter-of-factly.
"Me, too," I agreed.
Then I quit. My eyes were tired and my fingers hurt. He continued on his own, and eventually beat that ogre in a few days.
As for me, I felt so glad. With my fibromyalgia, I can't be the kind of mom that I want to be. I can't get up and go and play and run and do all of those things I wish to do. But every few days, if I save up the energy, Marc and I can play a game where we work together, use our minds, and laugh our butts off! To me, that's priceless.
