Marc opening birthday presents for the 10th time!

Marc turned ten years old this week. He's so handsome and smart these days. I know I sound like a sappy old fool, but I swear he was just a sweet little doll-faced boy snuggled in my arms yesterday. Ten years sounds like such a long time, but it's not!
As usual, we had a party at our house with his friends. He insisted on a Bionicle party. If you're not familiar with Bionicle, don't waste your time learning. They were Lego toys that aren't sold anymore, except to collectors on eBay and ToyWiz.com. In fact, Marc and his friends may very well be the last generation of Bionicle geeks! It's really hard to plan a party around a line of characters they don't make anymore. No Bionicle-themed plates or banners for us. I had to get creative. But I think I pulled it off!
But the party isn't what was most interesting about my son's tenth birthday. The most interesting thing is how grown-up he seemed that day. In my eyes, Marc is a perpetual four year old. I just couldn't get over the size of him and all of his ten-year-old friends. He has one friend who is only six, and that friend seemed so tiny compared to all of the bigger boys. He spoke like a big kid and helped cut cake like a big kid. He even has the missing teeth of a big kid.
"Mom," he said at one point during the party. "Do you think it'd be alright if I took one of my presents out of the package and played with it? I promise I'll share." If that's not maturity, I don't know what is.
I can't help but remember myself sitting in the rocking chair in his old room next to his crib. Wasn't it just the other day that I rocked him back and forth at his 2am feeding? I would sing "Dream a Little Dream" as softly as I could until he fell asleep.
His sweet face is the same face he had as a baby, too. His laugh is still the same, and his eyelashes are still the longest I've ever seen. He's so much the same as he was when he was tiny, but he's so frighteningly different.
But this isn't just my oldest child's tenth birthday. It's something else as well. It's my tenth anniversary of motherhood! And I have to say, it's been fantastic decade. Ever since I was small, I wanted to be a mother. No matter what career I envisioned myself in, I always saw myself as a mother as well. It was my dream, and Marc had made that dream come true.
Is this just the sappiest blog you've read yet this week? I hope so, because that's how I'm feeling at the moment: sappy and sentimental. My baby is a big kid, and I'm a mom with a whole decade of parenting under her belt.
I'm going to be grateful for it. It won't be long before he starts smoking cigarettes, drinking beer, experimenting with drugs and sex, talking back to me, driving a car, and getting speeding tickets. I have a feeling that the next ten years are going to be a little more exciting than the last!
In the meantime, I'll keep looking at that face that's still a little bit of a baby face and he'll keep calling me "Mommy". Happy birthday to Marc!
He sounds like a sweet kid! I always wanted to be a mom too, but I never imagined just how rewarding and wonderful it would be. And yes, they get kind of sassy, for me, somewhere between the magical ages of tweendom. But, I can be a bit of a sass-master myself.Sounds like he's a sweet, considerate young man. It made me think of my own son, since he'll turn 10 in February! It is hard to watch them grow up, especially since you can picture them as they were when they were little.
