'Tis the season!
Well, Halloween, you've done it. You've snuck up on me. Congratulations.
I don't know what happened. I mean, it's so perfect every year. October 1st hits and the decorations go up. Each year is more elaborate, you know. It started with a ghost on the front door and evolved to cotton cobwebs and plastic spiders all over the porch. Then, last year, I added shrouds, goulies, ghosties, and zombies that came out of the ground.
Oh, and the jack-o-lanterns! Usually, I can't wait carve up my first victim... er... pumpkin. We usually buy our pumpkins way too early and carve them up during the first part of October. Since they are always moldy by mid-October, we repeat the steps. Two times the squash-murdering fun!
Let's not forget costumes! What we're going to be for Halloween tends to be the discussion throughout most of September. I was a vampire several years in a row, then a witch for a few more years. For Charlotte's first Halloween her father and I were Ghostbusters and she was Slimer, of course. (I tried to convince Marc to be our third Ghostbuster but he decided to be a ghostbusting ninja instead.)
I don't know what happened this year. Did I get busy? Was I tired? There is not a single Halloween decoration on or in our home. I'm scrambling to make Marc's costume at the last minute. I have anxiety over the fact that Charlotte hates her costume. I still don't know what I'm going to be, and I'm trying to eek in pumpkin murder... er... carving sometime this week.
What happened?
My Halloween love goes way back, you know. I was talking with my dad yesterday and asking him what he was doing this year. He said he was doing nothing.
"Remember that one year Sheldon and I had the haunted porch?" I asked him.
Sheldon was my best friend in high school. My junior year I decided to be dead for Halloween. Not a zombie. Just dead. Sheldon helped flesh out the haunted porch idea. I sat in a chair on the front porch, nice and dead like, with a bowl of candy in front of me. When someone came up to get candy, and wake up! Then Sheldon would run screaming out of the house and I'd chase him all the way around back to the front porch where I'd resume my playing dead until the next victim arrived.
I know it sounds like a mean trick, but it was a small town. I promise you the kids got the joke.
That was years ago. I forget how many. But my love for Halloween holds strong. It's no wonder I'm feeling stressed out about no decorations. This is my favorite holiday by far. I'd better kick it into gear or I'll miss it.
