Before and after the bi-annual hair donation haircut.

Two years ago my hair was getting a little long, so I went in for a haircut. I actually ended up chopping it all off and donating the 13 inches to Locks of Love, an organization that makes human hair wigs for kids with cancer who can't afford to buy a wig. I loved the experience so much, I decided to just become a hair farm. I would grow and chop, grow and chop, all for Locks of Love.
Two years and 11.5 inches later, I chopped it off again.
Goodbye sweaty neck, frizzy hair, and ponytail holders. Adios, clogged tub drain and wads of hair in my purse. Au revoir, split ends and the search for creative ways to tie my hair back. I won't miss you.
This weekend, I went to see my friend Madalyn at Footlights (shout out!). She did a great job. I told her I was doing a hair donation, so she tied my hair back and braided it. I warned her that I got pretty emotional last time. I know it's just hair, but it was my hair. It was part of my body for two years! I told her not to laugh at me if I cry while she's cutting it off.
It was gone before I finished that sentence. Swift like a bandage.
Then I held out a picture of Amelie. Does anyone remember that movie? Yes, I realize I am stuck in the nineties, but I love that haircut nonetheless. In about five minutes, you wouldn't have known the difference between me and Audrey Tautou! And I didn't cry once.
Before my haircut, I looked an awful lot like Yoko Ono circa 1974. Amelie is a step up, don't you think?
When I got home, Charlotte was still napping. When my husband brought her downstairs a little later, she wouldn't come near me. She hid her face and ran to the other room. It was almost two hours before she would even let me hold her. I don't think she knew it was me! She's never known me to have anything but long hair.
As for Marc, he told me I looked really strange and that I didn't look like myself. He said he missed my long hair and wanted me to grow it back.
Today, she's over it. She knows I'm me. Marc is over it too, but it took a day. I think next time I do this, I'll take them with me so there's no surprises!
But I'm feeling good. I'm feeling good because I did something good with my hair instead of just letting it be swept up into the trash. I also feel good because my hair was thick and hot! Will I do this again? I'm telling people no. It took so long to grow, and it got so hot. But I don't know. I might have one more donation in me.
Really, the most important thing is that I look super-cute! Am I right? I mean, what is life if you can't be super-cute?
Kidding, kidding!
Super-Cute! Growing my hair (6 months +), too, for donating. Feels sorta like giving back enviromentally to the Cosmos. Recycling. It's VERY cute, Val! And yes, you do look like Audrey Tautou (my niece was named for that movie). I wish I could grow my hair long enough to donate, but it just won't get that long. I have a friend (male) who donates his hair as often as he can. I just admire so much people who do that!
