Acting!

I have been absolutely dying to write this blog! I had to put off talking about it because, well, these things take time. I've been in a creative rut lately, but my friend William Peck over at Metaphor Media provided me with a kind of outlet I never would have thought of on my own: acting!
That's right. This mama is an actress! Well, an actress of sorts. Well, I didn't act so much as represent. This mama represents!
It was pretty funny, too. When I spoke to Bill on the phone, he told me he needed a very professional-looking woman; very corporate, and very clean. I can do corporate and clean, I told him. He asked if I had a business suit.
Then, when I was finished laughing...
He gave me the number of the lovely Vanessa Nelson, who's product I would be representing. Vanessa is a single mom and entrepreneur with a wonderful vision. She described the part to me and I would have to come up with a costume. I say "costume" because the Valorie in real life would never, ever wear a business suit.
I was supposed to be a corporate businesswoman coming in off of an airplane for some sort of business. I really miss my kid, and I'll be using her product, Active Parent Books, to read a story to him or her over the phone.
"I'm going to tell you something that might sound kind of strange to you," I told her. "I don't really wear make up, and I don't actually own any make up."
Guess who has make up now. Me. I have make up now.
I found my self a blazer, briefcase, and rolling laptop bag. Then I assembled my costume and I felt truly corporate. My hair was up, my lashes were long, my ears sparkled with diamonds (or glass, you'd never know and I'll never tell!), and I rode with Bill to where we would shoot the scenes I was in. It was excellent. I would walk away from an airplane like I was in a hurry on my way to a business meeting. That part where I looked down at my phone while I was walking? That was my idea. Yeah. I'm a writer too.
In the office, I said my lines perfectly. I only flubbed up once. The whole time I was thinking "I can't wait to show Marc this! He's gonna be thrilled!
When the shooting was over, I came home and put on my real clothes: jeans and a t-shirt with my hair in two braids. I picked Marc up from school and told him what I had done that day. I explained that I got to dress up and look nice with my hair and make up.
"You wore make up?" he said. "Who are you?" Heh. My kid knows me. I'll blog about my anti-make up beliefs later, for those who are curious.
That was two weeks ago. I am a serious attention-lover, which is ironic because I also have terrible stage fright. There have been some snafus in getting the promotional video to go live, but I finally get to talk about it! The product is a set of books for parents who have to be away from their kids for an extended period of time. The child has their copy of the book while the parent has a more portable copy they read over the phone. And I can't go without linking to Vanessa's site, ActiveParentBooks.com. She would love some feedback on the video!
Oh, what's that? You want to see the video? Oh, alright: Here it is!
This experience has definitely gotten me out the creative rut I've been in. I'm not sure if I'll really pursue acting or not, although I did tell Bill to keep me in mind for voiceovers as needed. But I had a great time representin'!
It's fun to do something out of your comfort zone, isn't it?! When I lived in KS I went through training to be a Master Food Volunteer, and later taught classes. One time they needed someone to do a demonstration on the Sat AM news on Ch. 5 and my dh taped it. It was so fun! He told me I was like a *funny* Martha Stewart! Hope you have discovered a new path on the journey of life, blessings to you!Very nice! I dig the makeup. Oooo, you did great in the video too. Interesting product. I like it. The only feedback that I have about the video is the music is kinda sad sounding. Kinda like the music on those commercials to help abused animals. Nice blog. Glad you're venturing out of your comfort zone. :)
