Fools for a day.

"Hope you're having fun in Chicago without me. Feel free to not come back."
That was what I posted on my husband's Facebook wall on Friday morning. Harsh. Cold. Wrong. After that came a few snidely placed comments full of bitterness and anger. It was like we were both looking for a reason to publicly shame each other. And then it happened.
"Valorie has changed her relationship status from 'Married' to 'It's Complicated'."
Did you know that if you change your relationship status from "Married" to "It's Complicated", the other person's status still says "Married"? And if you want to go back to being "Married" Facebook has to ask the other person permission? It's true!
Within a few short hours my inbox was full of messages from friends and family asking me what happened, offering their condolences, and begging for an explanation. I just couldn't keep it up for long. It was too painful. I don't know what I was thinking, and I felt like it had gone on long enough. So I let them know.
All of them had been fooled. Some would call them "April Fools".
Oh, boy, did Mitch and I ever have a hearty chuckle! We sure fooled them! Wish we could have seen their faces when they realized what day it was! Silly people.
Silly people who we lied to and made feel anxious and confused for no reason other than our own entertainment. Huh. I never thought about the possibility that I might hurt people.
I picked Marc up from school and asked him if he knew it was April Fools day. I asked him if anyone tried to fool him, and he said everyone tried. I asked him if he fooled anyone, and he said no.
Then, he said "I don't get April Fools day. Why would anyone want to try to trick anyone else? I mean, it's not fun to lie to people and then laugh at them about it."
Okay, well, I admit that sometimes I learn life's lessons from my son. This is one of those times. I mean, I knew this lesson and had been taught this lesson, but it took a handsome nine year old telling it to me to really learn it. I'm not a trickster, normally. I just couldn't help myself. My brother texted me that morning saying he was on the train down here and was going to come live with me. I saw right through that, but I caught the contagious April Fool bug.
At any rate, I am so sorry for trying to trick all of my friends. Not only did I trick them, but I chose a pretty upsetting trick. My husband and I love each other dearly and while our marriage is not without its expected ups and downs, divorce is certainly not an idea we're entertaining. Not even close!
In the words of the enlightening and illustrious Marc Thomas, "When you play a trick on someone for April Fools, you're really the one who's the fool."
Thanks for sharing. We were at the DimeStore one day and my son saw the fake vomit and other fake stuff. When he asked me why someone would buy that I explained April Fool's Day. He is 11 and didn't understand the point, either!I think harmless pranks are funny, as long as the "victim" is laughing too. April Fool's Day is meant to be fun. Making jokes about the demise of your marriage . . . well, probably not so much. Glad it was just a joke! :)
